Hi Guys,

Figured I might start this thread since there is some great stuff coming out. I like to find out on websites what are future movies for release.

While not a Trekkie, I don't mind a bit of science fiction and do look forward to some new movies coming out this year with pretty hard core special effects.

I liked Avatar, Rings Trilogy, Harry Potter Series, Chronicles of Riddick. I would have to say my all time favourite film was Shawshank Redemption.

Looking forward to seeing Battleship ( May 2012 Release) and Avatar 2 when they release it. The last movie I seen was only Sunday and that being " Muppet Movie".

Clerks 2, and Mal Rats were pretty funny , as I'm a big fan of " Jay and Silent Bob".

Cheers

Mark

I've seen a few good movies lately.

The Cube or just called Cube, its very similiar to a new one called sanctum.

Anything with Christian Bale in it is tops, American Pscho would have to rate as one of my Top 5, Equilibrium was another I seen just recently. I'd like to watch his new one called 'the fighter' as I'm a bit of a boxing fan.

Knowing - starring Nic Cage was a good one.

A few others that I just can't think of at the moment :-(

I'm a bit of a movieholic. I particularly like foreign movies. My all time favourite movie is "Raise the Red Lantern". A beautifully realised film starring the gorgeous Gong Li.

A film I saw just recently was "Departures". An interesting Japanese movie about a fellow who is a cello player in a privately-funded orchestra. When the company who is funding the orchestra goes bust, the cello player is forced to find other employment. As his mother has recently passed away, he and his wife decide to go back to the old home town where his mother used to run a small bar. He looks for employment, but the only job he can find is as an assistant to a man who prepares the dead for burial. In spite of its potentially morbid subject matter, this is an amazing film, amusing in parts and well worth seeing.

I like to buy movies on-line from Amazon etc. The economics of this strategy are worth thinking about. Cost of cinema entrance these days is about $15 per person, plus the drinks or ice cream, plus the cost of transportation, parking?, etc. Whereas, a good movie DVD delivered to your letterbox is about $25. You also get to keep the movie to watch whenever you like.

Hope to hear from other movieholics.

Best wishes - Rob

Recently saw The Iron Lady, good dialogue in it, some I've spoke to didn't like it said dwelled on her current condition, but I beleive it was all relevant, if not sad.  I was never a fan of MT, but Merryl Streeps portrayal of her was fantastic, I had to keep reminding myself that it was not MT she played so well.  Very derserving of an Oscar, hope she gets one.

The other I saw recenty was Descendents with George Cluney, really enjoyed it and I am sure there are many here who could relate to it.  Well worth seeing IMHO.

To see an oldie but a goody, see All The Kings Men with David Jason (not to be confused with the US movie of the same name).

Google that for the youtube link but make sure you put with David Jason in the search box.

Also, on the link,  see the other bits on the menu at the side for more of the movie.

Warning, there are some very sad scenes (like the Warhorse movie) and the final scene shown on the right side menu is really sad.

Anyone see "The Ides of March"? Stunning. Ryan Gosling is the man of the hour.

As for oldies...Toy Story 3 jumped into mind.

I have been given 90 old black and white movies to copy to my harddrive, love the old ones.

Goodby Mr Chips, Roman Holiday,Twelve o'Clock High etc.

Now have a lot of movies so we are having movie nights with popcorn and Maltesers

Had the grand opening of the Rio Vista Cinema last night with friends and apart from some glitches with  DVD players and a laptop malfunction all went well.

Had to operate 3 remotes at once after a few wines, so were some breakdowns.

Twelve Angry Men (the original not the sloppy remake), Flight of the Phoenix (again the original although the remake was not too bad and at least resulted in the character Gregory House MD), No Highway in the Sky, It's a Wonderful Life.

Favourite movie: A Clockwork Orange

I am a big fan of SciFi but didn't enjoy the politics of Avatar, although the similar politics of "Silent Running" didn't deter my enthusiasm for Huey, Dewey, and Louie.

"Shawshank Redemption" is a great film and, sadly, one of the few Stephen King stories to be given a fair rendering - one other one being "Stand by Me".

Titanic (1997) is the most overrated picture I have ever had the misfortune to see.

Special mention: "This Sporting Life"

Of course then there's Zulu, Lawrence of Arabia, Sleuth... gawd...

Dont try to download Skyfall from bittorrent.

I'ts a scam and wastes 2gig of bandwidth.

My virus protection warns against completing the download after wasting the above.

To FAB...it depends on where you got the torrent file.

I recommend "Lincoln" if you can stand a long political movie.

I can't really recommend "Flight" although it started out really interesting it soon slowed and got silly at the end.

If I had to pick just one all time favourite I'd have to say "Dances With Wolves".

I've always wondered how you (and others smiley-laughing.gif) can pick a movie, song, place and call it your favourite, it would surely have to depend on how you feel at any given moment. having said that I replay "Paint Your Wagon" whenever I feel like a bit of a lift of spirit, always get a good laugh. Just love "Red Dog" and for a funny 'The Plank" good stupid funny British humour.

Saw Hitchkock this week. Really well done and entertaining. Anthony Hopkins is fantastic - an incredible actor. So many faces!  The story flows well and Scarlett Johanssen is an absolute honey as usual, playing Janet Leigh in the movie Psycho, which Hitchcock directed and which features in this film. 9/10.

Likewise Les Miserables is a gem. Dont miss it. Keeps you entertained the whole way through and Russel Crow doesn't do too bad a job of singing as the Police Chief (he does have his own rock band doesn't he.)  Again 9/10 and that's damn unusual for me!

Must check out Hitchcock. Wasn't that big a wrap for Les Mis  but maybe thats because I generally dont like musicals [ Producers & Monty Python's Holy Grail excepted] Russel Crowe was great but must admit when he was singing on that bridge I wished he'd hurry up & just jump off. There's a great French miniseries of the story of Les Mis [no music] , probably on DVD now, starring Gerard Depardieu & a real nasty John Malkovich. Think it was on SBS recently.

Saw "The Hobbit" yesterday & whilst not up to the 'Rings' standard, it's way ahead of so many other films out there. The critics have criticised it [surprise!] but it's a bit like an average Beatles' album; still brilliant. There's more humor than the trilogy & it'd be a good father/son movie if your kid's into the Rings.

Also caught 'The Descendants' on DVD & whilst beforehand I didnt have much time for pretty boy Clooney, he certainly won me over with his performance. 1st movie in ages that actually brought a tear to my eye. One of the girls really reminded me of my daughter.

Saw "life of Pi" This week really great effects and cinematography, good story with a nice twist at the end.

But the experience was soured because I decided to use some Gold Class gift cards I had to treat my wife on her birthday. Although I had the tickets (Gift Cards) I had to book the theater seats, I gave up trying to do it by phone after over an hour of engaged tones and did it online which incurred a booking fee of $12.50. When we arrived at the theater we ordered a couple of cokes and for during the movie a plate of dipping toast followed by some nachos, a small cocktail for the birthday girl and another coke for me. Cost $64.00    So without the cost of tickets an extra $76.50 luckily it was at a shopping centre who didn't charge for parking. I will be re-gifting any future gift cards to relatives I don't like.

I saw Ted the other day it is the funnest movie I have seen for a long time, I also just seen Life of Pi. it was very good in 3D. There are many movies coming out but so many of them are girlie movies, which are very boring.

Hi Tumbleweed, no wonder there is a big market in home theatre setups when you look at those costs, probably totally justifiable and OK for those special occasions.

Yes the "Life of Pi" very enjoyable, one of the few movies I have been to where the audience stood up and clapped at the end, odd that really, not everyone including myself but anyway that was the response it stirred in others.

Margarette P. and David S. got it wrong in slamming it for an unnecessarily long beginning (prelude).

My previous favourite movie was "The Hurt Locker", It is a bit restrictive having a favourite I guess so I will in future just own up to the "current most memorable".

To me the Hobbit was just "more of the same", I like to be supprised and entertained when I go to the movies.
