Hi Guys
My wife and I have no wish to travel overseas, but we love travelling and seeing Australia. We do not use a van or tent but stay in motels/hotels, but we cook our lunch on the road and eat lightly in the evening.
September will see us visiting Lightning Ridge, Cobar, Broken Hill then visiting family in and around Sydney then a slow trip back home.
2 years ago we did the Great Ocean Road, Ghan to Alice, back to Adelaide and a slow trip home. Away 1 month, and did just over 7000 klm.
Take care all of you
Regards
Tony

Hi Tony,
Thanks for your ideas of a "local" holiday. We don't see much about Australian travel. You mention "slow trip home" a couple of times. Where is "home". Just like to get the geography right.
Thanks,
Robers

Hi Tony, sounds like you are a pretty experienced traveller, but just a "heads up" on the Broken Hill area, be very carefull on the roads the last time I went through there the amount of Kangaroos, Emus, Sheep, Goats etc on the roads was incredible, oh yeh I nearly forgot the tortoise too.
If you don't have a Shu Roo, I would recomend at least getting a couple of animal repeller whistles from Auto Barn or SuperCheap, they are only around $10.

Thanks for the heads up. Will definately get myself a Shu Roo. We also visit my sons farm in the mountains about 70 klm from Oberon. They have lots of roos there too, never thought of a Shu Roo.
Thanks once again.

Another tip if interested, we stayed about 4 days in Broken Hill when we threw a timing belt, stayed at a nice little caravan park Lake View http://www.familyparks.com.au/caravanparkdetails.asp?ident=lvbcp
Nice atmosphere just on the edge of town, they have a very clean set up with good cabins

Hi Tony and Sheders
Tony I have just been retired two months. Intend to do a lot of travel ether tent or the same as you as my wife is not keen on the tent idea but what you do sounds good as it saves a little money but good on you for having a go.

Hi Francis,
Just remember, some wives are not as keen on the tents as the hubbies and could lead to the hubbie having to sleep out under the 4wd on the odd nights.

Hi Francis
Sorry that it took so long to reply. Had a fabulous trip October?November to Broken Hill, Followed Downunder's advice and fitted a couple of Shoo Roos. Seemed to work, did not see many roos but hundreds of goats and emu's but no problems.
End of October 1 week round trip to Albion Park Rail.
Just (yesterday) returned home from a couple of weeks in Sydney and the greatest news is that the Ballina By-Pass is open and fabulous.
Francis, there are some great deals to be had - Join up with some of the "Chains" we are members of the Golden Chain group - free membership - and get 10% off accomodation in all their Motels.
Everyone have a happy and healthy 2012
Regards
Tony

Hi Tony, Yes we (wife and I) sold our van and will use motels/hotels or cpark cabins, do you have any problems getting accom, kepping in mind that mining companies sometimes book most of the accom in some towns so tourists have problems? Were heading to Sydney(western)for 8 days in March, do you have any cheaper accom ideas ? Also how do you cook your lunch en,route?

G'day all,
Wife & I have done a bit of tent-based travelling in the past (when we were both a bit younger and more supple of limb!), visting southwest of WA & the Flinders Ranges / K.I. in SA, Much of Vic etc etc. These days we do the caravan park cabin & motel thing like Tony & his wife are doing.
My Hint: Cooking lunch or dinner as well as running up a fresh brew on the road is pretty simple and quick with one of those El Cheapo butane gas stoves that you can buy just about anywhere these days..... recently saw them advertised in a cattledog for $20. Unbelievable! You can get refill butane cannisters at most Coles & Woolies supermarkets. Use the plastic storage case part opened out on its side as a windbreak if needs. Packs away very small.
Happy travelling,
Whiskers

Hi Jeff.
As regard to accomodation, we book early. We also carry a laptop with internet access so we can look up all the motels in the town we wish to stay. Only once have we not been able to get a motel room so we adjusted our "stop over destination".
We also carry a small portable gas stove and a cast iron skillet, with this we can cook a simple lunch (piece of meat tomatoes and mushrooms)
As far as Sydney is concerned, we always stay in a cabin at the OK Caravan Park at Rouse Hill. We have just spent two weeks there over Christmas. You need to take your bed linen (Queen Bed) but you can hire a "kitchen Kit" from them for next to nothing.
Have a great time.
Regards Tony
